Storage Fees FAQ (Starting April 2026)

Follow

From April 1st, our new Private Warehouse Unlimited system will activate. This means that you can keep storing items after a FREE 6 months of storage and store them as long as you need to.

To keep your items for as long as you need us to, we will charge a small storage fee per item to keep your items for longer than the free 6 month period. If you ship an item before the FREE 180 day storage period ends, no storage fees will be charged.

These fees for storage will be known as ‘storage fees’ on our site and communications, and will begin appearing in your My Account page from April 1st if you have items that have been stored for over 180 days.

We reset our storage timer to give everyone an extra 6 months of storage in October 2025, so the earliest storage fees will begin charging is from April 1st, 2026.

To give as much clarity as we can on this new system and its benefits, we’ve included further information on each key point below.

  • How are storage fees charged?

Storage Fees for items stored over 180 days are calculated based on the size of the item and how long it is stored over 180 days. If you store for a whole month over 180 days, storage fee payment will be taken from your registered payment method on the last day of the month. This will occur each month until you ship the item.

You will be notified via email of your expected total monthly storage fee on the 15th of each month based on the items you have stored in the Private Warehouse at that time.

For those who ship before a whole month is completed, you will only be charged for the days you stored, calculated based on the cost of a whole month. This partial payment will be charged at the time you ship.

Any storage fees you will be expected to display will be shown in the Storage Fee Calculator, a new feature on the My Account page.

  • How are storage fees calculated?

The standard cost of storage fees per item will be based on the items. We start by adding together the width, height and depth of the item. This total amount is then multiplied by 5 Japanese yen to calculate the storage fee for 1 month. For example, if the total dimensions of an item add up to 100cm, this will cost 500 Japanese yen a month.

We also include tax as part of the displayed fee.

This calculation is done on a per item basis, as items will enter and leave your warehouse at different times. Your monthly bill for storage fee will be based on the total amount of all eligible stored items.

If you ship one item before a full month, at the time of shipping you’ll pay for the storage fees of just that item and only for the number of days it was actually stored. If the monthly cost of an item is 500 Japanese yen and you store it for 15 days before shipping, you’ll only pay 250 Japanese yen.

  • When are storage fees charged?

Storage fees for a complete month will be charged on the final day of the month.

If you ship before a complete month, a partial storage fee will be charged at the time you request shipment.

If you’ve been storing an item for over 180 days, fees will begin to accumulate from April 1st, 2026 (JST). If you want to avoid storage fees, please make a shipping request before April 1st, 2026 (JST).

  • Where can I see how much storage will cost for a product?

On a product page, the ‘storage fee’ will be displayed alongside other product information in the corner of the page. This will show the storage fee for 1 month of storage time, including tax.

In addition, the ‘storage fee calculator’ on the My Account page will also show the amount billed to you thus far and how much would be charged for a partial shipment depending on the date of shipping.

  • What happens if I miss a storage fee payment?

If your payment method cannot be charged in the monthly billing, then we re-attempt payment up to 7 times, once a day for a week. You can also attempt to charge your payment method again from the My Account page.

After 7 days of payment failure, our Customer Service team may be in contact to arrange a resolution. In principle, all storage fees must be paid before your item can be shipped, and we will continue to contact you about payment in the event of non-payment.

  • How do I ship my items without accumulating storage fees?

To avoid storage fees, simply request to ship your item before it reaches 180 days of storage. To do this, head to your account on hlj.com, click the section labelled ‘Private Warehouse’ and create a shipment using your preferred shipping method. Any shipments requested within the 180 free storage period will not be charged any storage fees.

  • How long can I store with Private Warehouse?

In theory, you can store as long as you’d like if you are paying for storage fees! We may get in touch with you to check that you still want to keep an item if it’s been a while, but there are no limits on how long we’ll store items under the new system.

  • What are the benefits of storing using the Private Warehouse?

Private Warehouse is perfect for customers who want to save money on shipping or shipping larger amounts of items together at once.

Bundle your items together into one shipment to save big on shipping. Every customer gets 6 months of storage completely free, and unlimited storage with just a small monthly storage fee.
